Dre of the Dead (this is where the nickname originated) is the film I made in my final year at University.
The Plot: A group of students get more than they’d bargained for when they smoke a batch of genetically modified marijuana – the fruit of a top-secret government experiment. After a single puff of the drug the subject becomes extremely stoned, a high from which they will never come-down. Typical side-effects such as The Munchies (a condition causing the smoker to experience insatiable hunger) are amplified and also permanent.
When all the snacks have been eaten, the only thing left to consume is HUMAN FLESH!!!”
Yes, I know, it’s stupid! But at its heart it’s a comedy. I’d been watching a lot of Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace at the time and knew that I wouldn’t have much money to play with. Cheap special effects and a tongue in cheek approach could turn this from a bad horror movie into something special.
It’s pretty rough around the edges but there are some great one-liners and creative zombie deaths. I like to think it all adds to the shabby character of this film-making monstrosity!
I was initially dubious about putting this on my portfolio website: The horrible interlacing problems, sloppy editing, foul language, drug references… but ultimately this movie represents some great ideas, put together with hard work, determination and absolutely ZERO budget.
This was one of the first big projects I put my heart and soul into and I hope that shines through.
